Description
- Activities
- This project aims to support all hatcheryauditing required for rssbp compliance during the cooperative agreementperiod. Contracted auditors will verify hatchery compliance with rssbphatchery best management practices, as outlined ashttps://rssbp.ORG/rssbp-best-management-practices/. Audits typicallywill occur over one day, with occasional overnight travel by thecontracted auditors. Delays in audits are possible due to theavailability of auditors, although the network of available auditors isgrowing with the increasing participation in the rssbp among shellfishhatcheries.also, this project will augment hatchery surveillance by collaboratingwith regional USDA aphis field veterinarians. Under the rssbp, pathogensurveillance occurs only for shellfish with the size classes thatparticipant hatcheries seek to certify. Regular surveillance across allsize classes within a hatchery will therefore broaden our understandingof shellfish pathogens in shellfish hatcheries and biosecurity risksassociated with shellfish hatcheries. USDA aphis field veterinarianswill regularly visit rssbp-certified hatcheries, collecting samplesacross all size classes in production, and send samples off to a usdaaphis-approved diagnostic laboratory (kennebec river biosciences) foridentification and quantification of notifiable shellfish pathogens.deliverables and expected outcomes: this cooperative agreement willsupport hatchery auditing under the rssbp, and IT will build cooperativeshellfish pathogen surveillance into the hatchery certification program.regular surveillance across all size classes within a hatchery willbroaden our understanding of shellfish pathogens in shellfish hatcheriesand the biosecurity risks associated with shellfish hatcheries.surveillance reports will be generated quarterly. This work directlysupports USDA aphis mission to protect the health of USA agriculture andnatural resources against diseases.
