Description
- Purpose
- Provide funding and support for continuation of a knotweed biocontrol program in NY. Specifically, to provide funding for rearing, site selection and releases of a biocontrol agent, the psyllid aphalara itadori.2.
- Activities
- Continue rearing a. Itadori in CCE greenhouse. Continue data collection and monitor all release sites for psyllid establishment. Continue release of a. Itadori on 1- 6 sites for second season. Continue to train and manage volunteers to maintain program. Provide outreach to COMMUNITY3. Deliverables and expected outcomes: at the end of this agreement, CCE niagara will have completed all five objectives outlined for this agreement. Collected data from those sites for monitoring target and non-target impacts associated with release of psyllids to help further the impact to control knotweed. CCE niagara will have continue to use master gardeners and 4-h member volunteers to help maintain the program. Our goal would be raising enoughfuture generations of a. Itadori for future releases and to possibly share with other cooperators in new york state. Our outreach impact will begin to spread the message of our program and information on the invasive knotweed. Cooperator will submit reports to the aphis authorized department officer's designated representative (adodr), including: a. Narrative accomplishment reports in the frequency and time frame specified in the NOA, article 4B. Federal financial reports, SF-425, in the frequency and time frame specified in the NOA, article 44. Intended beneficiary(IES):japanese knotweed, fallapia japonica, giant knotweed, fallapiasachalinensis, and their hybrid, f. X bahemica occur throughout new york state. These species colonize wetlands, stream and riverbanks, and open areas throughout the state. Once established, they displace native vegetation and form dense monocultures that seriously impact the ecological and recreational value of wetlands, as the plants are of little value to native wildlife, and they limit access to boating, fishing, and hunting opportunities. More importantly, these plants have no fine root structure to stabilize soil in riparian zones, so they increase erosion and change the composition of plant, macroinvertebrate, and fish species in and around impacted bodies of water. These knotweeds are extremely expensive for public and private land managers to control, and once established, eradication is near impossible without further impacting the environment by removing the top 2 meters of soil. Releasing the psyllid, aphalaraitadori, into new york state should allow land managers to focus their limited resources on high priority areas, minimize any further degradation of fish and wildlife habitat, and contribute to the restoration of native plants.5.
