Description
- Purpose
- Our goal is to protect agricultural, economic, andenvironmental resources by supporting early detection of SLF in new yorkwith highly trained conservation detection dogs. We aim to augmentexisting mitigation capabilities in NYS by deploying detection DOG teamsto designated checkpoints and inspection locations on high-risk pathwaysfor SLF spread in coordination with and under direction ofusda-aphis-pppq SLF NY.2.
- Activities
- The nynjtc conservation dogs program willconduct up to 50 surveys and agricultural inspections for SLF EGG massesbetween november 2022 and may 2023 in the lower hudson prism region.trips outside of the lower hudson are anticipated to take place whereslf does not already have a breeding population and the dogs will beused as an early detection/rapid response methodology targeting priorityprotection of NYS agricultural resources. Lastly, outreach and educationare imperative in the fight against emerging invasive species. Becauseof dogs' unmatched abilities to connect with people as ambassadors, social media content will be created to publicize the work we'RE doing. We will allow for up to 6 field days to be used for educationaldemonstrations or volunteer EGG mass scraping events with the dogsinstead of surveying.3. Deliverables and expected outcomes:• broader range of early detection surveys: detection DOG teams can helpwith early detection efforts by surveying and inspecting low-densityinfestations.• improved accuracy of surveys and inspections with expected lowdensities of SLF detection DOG teams are better able to search areasthat are not visually accessible to human searchers.• improved efficiency of surveys and inspections: studies have shownthat dogs are more efficient at searching because they'RE able to covera larger area and detect infestations from a further distance thanhumans.• increased public awareness of SLF: dogs are excellent ambassadors dueto their charisma and can be used to boost the education and outreachneeded to mitigate the spread of SLF.• in addition, the program coordinator will be responsible for dataentry and reporting. Every week, data collected during surveys andinspections will be entered into an internal spreadsheet withdog-specific metrics (see 3B), as well as the standardized SLF surveyspreadsheet. The SLF survey spreadsheet will be sent to PPQ once perweek and the DOG specific data will be compiled into monthly reportswhich will be distributed to PPQ director within one week of the end ofeach month.cooperator will submit reports to the aphis authorized departmentofficer's designated representative (adodr), including:a. Narrative accomplishment reports in the frequency and time framespecified in the NOA, article 4B. Federal financial reports, SF-425, in the frequency and time framespecified in the NOA, article 44. Intended beneficiary(IES): the public, nurseries, tree farms, vineyards and other fruit farms. Hops and NY's burgeoning brewery landscape, as well as grape and wine industry will also benefit from increased awareness of and surveys for SLF. If SLF is notcontained, quarantines could threaten export markets for hardwoods ($5.5BILLION annually) and fruit trees ($954 million annually from applesalone). There are a multitude of agricultural, economic, andenvironmental resources at risk of unmitigated spread of SLF.5. Subrecipient activities, if known or specified at the time of award:n/a
