Description
- Activities
- By quantitatively assessing overstory trees, regeneration, herbaceous vegetation and coarse woody debris in black ashforests representing varying stages of the EAB invasion wave. Data willbe collected in a total of 12-15 sites along a gradient of the eabinvasion wave in the north central and northeastern US. Study sites willrepresent post-invasion "core" conditions, "crest" sites where eabpopulations are building or near peak densities, and "cusp" sites thatare not yet infested or at least exhibit no signs of EAB presence.deliverables and expected outcomes: results from this research will beused to outline potential strategies for sustainable management in sitesrepresenting varying stages of the EAB invasion wave. Topics may includeuse of individual tactics and integration of multiple tactics such assystemic insecticides, girdled ASH trees, parasitoid releases, andpotential options to restore black ASH or facilitate recruitment of ashregeneration (if present). Additional observations by NWS and DGM fromsites where treatments to protect black ASH have been implemented willbe included when developing management or mitigationstrategies. MSU will communicate with outreach specialists to deliverresearch results and management strategies to tribes, forestryprofessionals, extension foresters, regulatory personnel, landowners andother entities. Outreach efforts to date include invited presentationswhere project goals, methods and preliminary data were shared withnative american tribes, foresters, invasive species managers and relatedpersonnel. Opportunities for additional presentations along withdevelopment of printed information, and on-line posting of images andrelated materials will continue.intended beneficiary(IES): information obtained from this project willbe used to outline potential strategies for sustainable management insites representing varying stages of the EAB invasion wave and allowfunding agencies, legislators, and foreign countries information to makesound strategic decisions about sustainable ASH forests.subrecipient activities, if known or specified at the time of award: nosubrecipients included in this agreement.
