Description

The hoopa valley tribe niwhong-XW Kiwiyul: healthy food for hoopa people while strengthening local food systems project under the local food purchase assistance plus authorized by the commodity credit corporation will improve elder and community members equitable access to fresh, locally produced foods while providing tribal and other socially disadvantaged producers a reliable market and support local supply chain resiliency. The purpose of this agreement is to purchase and distribute local food targeting purchases from socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers. This project will facilitate purchase agreements with local producers and gatherers for fresh fruits and vegetables; traditional foods such as acorns, berries, mushrooms and herbs; eggs and minimally processed meats. In-kind support for producers will be provided by the klamath-trinity resource conservation district. This project will use existing tribal food distribution programs that serve disadvantaged populations such as low-income families, and the hoopa community. At least 100 food boxes will be distributed to participants of KIMA:W medical centerS senior nutrition program. At least 50 boxes each week will be distributed to the community at-large through the food distribution program. Strengthening hoopaS food system and restoring the tribeS food sovereignty will improve individual, community and ecological health and sustainability. This project will empower local producers to stabilize their operation allowing them to grow their customer base, strengthen the local economy, promote sound stewardship and protect agricultural and gathering lands. Quarterly performance reports will be submitted to capture the number of producers, socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers, distribution sites, and underserved locations as well as funds expended for each category. Annual reports will provide percentages of new marketing opportunities and purchases distributed beyond current food distribution networks. Twenty-five producers and 3,000 residents will benefit from this project. The recipient does not intend to subaward funds.
