This $331,307 Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Regional Wetland Program Development Grants (CFDA 66.461) will fund the Kansas Water Office to quantify the capacity of farm pond wetlands in northeastern Kansas to improve water quality, store water, and provide habitat. The project will use a combination of monitoring, field assessments, and geospatial analysis to measure water chemistry, discharge, storage changes, vegetation, and macroinvertebrates at 10 farm pond wetlands. This data will be used to update a Geospatial Wetland Conversion Index (GWCI) that can guide future conservation actions like riparian management, pond retirement, restoration, or conversion. The project will also develop enhanced need and opportunity indices for farm pond wetlands in the Delaware River watershed based on updated land use data. The anticipated deliverables include the expanded GWCI, maps depicting farm pond wetlands and GWCI values, ambient condition reports, and landowner-specific data and analyses. The award has an ultimate completion date of September 30, 2026.
