Description

Applying its unique expertise and experience as the developers of both the widely used lightning mapping array (LMA) and a new innovative broadband very high frequency (VHF) lightning interferometer (intf) LMA technologies LLC will provide support of NASA and NOAA programs concerned with lightning studies. Both of these lightning observing systems provide state-of-the-art 2-d and 3-d observations of the structure and temporal development of complete lightning flashes inside thunderstorms. The observations can be used as a proxy for lightning discharges to be detected optically by the global lightning mapper (GLM) on board the upcoming goes-r satellite. The intf measurements in particular are obtained with microsecond to sub-microsecond time resolution and include similar high time-resolution sferics observations indicative of optically bright current events.
