The proposed research aims to comprehensively characterize the performance of field-based color tests used by law enforcement and forensic laboratories, assess their accuracy, reliability and error rates, and evaluate the impact of real-world sample compositions on...
- The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded SKM Instruments, Inc. $314,317 on July 1, 2026, under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to develop a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)-based lateral flow assay for rapid detection and quantification of existing and emerging illicit drugs in urine samples. The platform integrates three innovations: a SERS-active lateral flow cartridge that processes urine samples, removes interferents, and separates drug mixtures and...
- This Project Grant award from the National Institute of Justice (CFDA 16.560 - National Institute of Justice Research, Evaluation, and Development Project Grants) provides $434,500 to 9 Delta Analytical, LLC to develop two key products: 1) An inexpensive, visually-read testing device that allows rapid identification of fentanyl and other opioids in oral fluid samples, and 2) Environmentally-friendly laboratory confirmation procedures for analyzing the same oral fluid samples. The goal is to...
- The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded Nefer Ka LLC $311,380 on July 1, 2026, under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to develop economical, portable detection technology for illicit drugs in bodily fluids using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The recipient will reduce costs and improve performance of SERS-based drug detection systems through two parallel technical approaches. First, Nefer Ka will leverage its scalable production technique to lower the...
- This $586,936 Project Grant award from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) supports the development of a low-cost, disposable urine test strip that can rapidly and quantitatively measure substance use disorder (SUD) medication drugs and their metabolites. The award recipient, Vitan-Biotech LLC, will create a point-of-use lateral flow assay (LFA) test strip that leverages innovative signal amplification technology to...
- The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded LC Acquisition LLC, doing business as Axcend LLC, $313,721 for a Phase I project grant under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) effective June 1, 2026. The award funds development and evaluation of a miniature tandem ion mobility spectrometry (IMS/IMS) detector integrated into a compact, portable capillary liquid chromatography system to detect trace amounts of novel psychoactive substances and fentanyl adulterants in bodily...
- This $399,300 Project Grant, awarded by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) under the CFDA 16.560 National Institute of Justice Research, Evaluation, and Development Project Grants program, aims to develop the Expert Algorithm for Substance Identification (EASI) to improve the confidence of drug identifications involving tandem mass spectra. The key products and services to be delivered under this 2-year grant include: Developing the EASI algorithm to enable the identification of new...
- The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded Research Triangle Institute (RTI International) $636,838 on June 1, 2026, under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to assess medical examiner and coroner toxicology testing practices during the opioid crisis. RTI will develop a typology of medical examiner and coroner triaging practices for suspected overdose deaths, determine which organizational characteristics are associated with triaging approaches, and calculate the...
PURPOSE: TO ESTABLISH AND CONVENE A WORKING GROUP AND DEVELOP CONSENSUS STANDARDS (STANDARD METHOD PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS AND VALIDATION PROTOCOLS) FOR FIELDABLE COLORIMETRIC TESTS USED TO DETECT ILLICIT DRUGS.ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED: IN ORDER TO CREATE THE CONSENSUS STANDARDS, AOAC WILL ESTABLISH AN ADVISORY PANEL AND WORKING GROUP OF RELEVANT STAKEHOLDERS TO DRAFT THE STANDARDS. AOAC WILL FACILITATE THE MEETINGS AND DRAFTING OF THE STANDARDS WHICH WILL BE POSTED FOR PUBLICATION COMMENT ONCE COMPLETED. AFTER PUBLISHING THE STANDARDS, AOAC WILL WORK WITH TEST KIT MANUFACTURERS TO SOLICIT APPLICATIONS FOR CERTIFICATION.EXPECTED OUTCOMES: THE PROPOSED WORK WILL PRODUCE TWO CONSENSUS-BASED STANDARDS FOR FIELDABLE COLORIMETRIC DRUG TESTS - A STANDARD METHOD PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS DOCUMENT AND A VALIDATION PROTOCOL. THE DEVELOPMENT OF THESE DOCUMENTS WILL ENABLE TEST MANUFACTURERS TO SEEK CERTIFICATION BY AOAC VERIFYING THEIR TESTS MEET THE MINIMUM PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS. INTENDED BENEFICIARIES: GENERATION OF CONSENSUS STANDARDS FOR FIELDABLE COLORIMETRIC DRUG TESTS WOULD DIRECT SUPPORT LOCAL, STATE, AND FEDERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AND PUBLIC HEALTH AGENCIES AS WELL AS U.S. CUSTOMS AND BORDER PROTECTION WHO REGULARLY PROCURE AND USE THESE TESTS. INDIRECTLY, THE DEVELOPMENT OF THESE STANDARDS WOULD SUPPORT THE GENERAL PUBLIC BY INCREASE TRANSPARENCY IN THE PERFORMANCE OF SUCH TESTS WHEN USED IN LAW ENFORCEMENT SETTINGS.SUBRECIPIENT ACTIVITIES: THE RECIPIENT DOES NOT INTEND TO SUBAWARD FUNDS.
