Description
- Purpose
- The purpose is to generate new geospatial analyses of tornado and thunderstorm winds to inform future building codes and standards. Ultimately, this research will provide updated information that can be used in the future design and construction of wind-resilient buildings, which accordingly will reduce the vulnerability of society to the dangers of thunderstorms and tornadoes.
- Activities
- The project will employ a convection-permitting dynamical downscaling (cpdd) modeling approach and exploit existing algorithms to enable identifying occurrences of tornadoes (task 1) and severe thunderstorms (task 2) in simulations. An extraction the corresponding windspeeds from historical events and future occurrences will ultimately yield an assessment of future nonstationary risk associated with tornado and thunderstorm winds in the U.S.task 1 will conduct geospatial analyses of the frequency distribution of tornado windspeed across the eight-model ensemble. The results will be presented in geospatial maps of maximum tornado windspeeds during both historical and future time periods for different annual recurrence intervals (RIS), from which future change factors can be determined; the use of a model ensemble will provide uncertainty estimates to the change factors. Task 2 will conduct geospatial analyses of the frequency distribution of thunderstorm windspeeds during the future as well as historical time periods, across the eight-model ensemble. Task 2 will culminate in a geospatial map of maximum thunderstorm windspeeds during both time periods for different RIS, from which future change factors can be determined.
- Expected outcomes
- The proposed research will generate new methods of geospatial analyses of tornado and thunderstorm winds to inform future building codes and standards. The research will advance the wind load requirements in asce standard 7 based on an improved scientific basis for wind models. Ultimately, this research will help reduce the vulnerability of society to the dangers of thunderstorms and tornadoes.
- Intended beneficiaries
- Researchers and designers that address wind loads for buildings and infrastructure systems, codes and standards that would benefit from improved wind load design values, and the general public that will see reduced damage from these wind events in the future.
- Subrecipient activities
- The recipient does not intend to subaward funds.
