Description

Activities
The project is composed of three major tasks. 1) using historical data from NOAA and the national hurricane center, employ monte carlo techniques to create a simulated hurricane database with many more years of data than available in the current historical record, which is needed for task 2. 2) combine hurricane wind speeds with the latest available data on inland winds (e.g., thunderstorms) to make maps of expected peak gust wind speed across the united states (including hawaii and US territories), for the mean recurrence intervals prescribed in the building codes and standards. 3) develop a proposal for incorporation of these new design wind speed maps into the asce 7-28 standard, in collaboration with NIST.
Expected outcomes
Gridded data and isotach (CONTOUR) maps of peak gust wind speeds for the US and its territories, and a proposal submitted to the asce 7 wind load subcommittee for incorporation of these new maps into the 2028 edition of the standard.
Intended beneficiaries
The public will benefit through improved building safety and economy resulting from improved design wind speed maps in future editions of building codes and standards, probabilistic hurricane wind speed data and maps, and the researchers will benefit through successful completion of this highly visible and highly impactful project.
Subrecipient activities
The recipient does not intend to subaward funds.
