Description
- Activities
- The overall approach has the following steps for a future point in time:climate model simulations: for an ensemble of regional climate model (RCM) simulations, extract gridded variables at a 3-HR time-steps (for upper-atmosphere temperature and geopotential height, surface temperature, and precipitation amount). Surface wind speed, DEW point temperature, and downwelling solar radiation will also be extracted from the models. Modeling ICE accretion in freezing rain: the data will be processed to generate time series of freezing rain events, which will be used as input to ICE accretion models. The models calculate ICE accretion in terms of the equivalent radial ICE thickness on a horizontal cylinder with axis perpendicular to the wind. Validating climate models and estimating future loads: freezing rain, ICE accretion, and ICE thickness extremes calculated from national centers for environmental prediction (NCEP) north american regional reanalysis (NARR) data using the methods outlined above will be compared with existing asce 7 maps generated from station data. This comparison will highlight regions where station observations and gridded data may disagree. Historical data from the NA-cordex models will be validated against the NARR data. Model biases will be calculated through all steps of the process (freezing rain frequency and amount, ICE accretion, and ICE thickness extremes).following successful validation of the modeled ICE thicknesses, the process will be repeated with future simulations to obtain projected estimates of ICE thickness at two future periods.
- Expected outcomes
- The methodology will help establish advanced structural design criteria that would be implementable by public agencies in next generation building codes that will improve their capacity to withstand future extreme climate events. The research will expand spatial representation and to incorporate newer observations in addition to future estimates of ICE loads to structures. The project will also improve the scientific basis for ICE loads on structures in future editions of the american society of civil engineers? (ASCE) minimum design loads and associated criteria for buildings and other structures standards (ASCE-7) to account for the effect of climate change when designing new structures and assessing the safety of existing facilities.
- Intended beneficiaries
- Information gathered from this research will help improve codes and standards for structures subject to natural hazards, such as ICE loads, particularly those affected by future climate effects. Additionally, this research will support advances in community resilience planning for future hazards. These advances in characterizing future hazards for design of structures will save lives and limit costs by ensuring sustained structural integrity.
