Description
- Purpose
- The purpose of this grant is to improve methods for assessing the resilience of the electric power system in the US such that IT maintains and/or rapidly recovers from disruptions when exposed to damaging extreme weather events, using the impact of hurricane maria in puerto rico as a field laboratory.
- Activities
- This study will perform three key activities: (1) develop a hybrid numerical experimental approach for the predictive assessment of vulnerability of the electric power transmission infrastructure when exposed to extreme climate conditions. Using multiscale high-resolution weather models coupled with computational fluid dynamic models of scaled transmission towers for wind tunnel testing; (2) application of the modeling framework in the context of at risk coastal and islanded communities, with PR as first use case, and (3) in collaboration with local power companies develop a unique field testbed for model evaluation through instrumentation of 10 towers within the 35 miles length of the testbed, and lidar drone mapping and digital surface modeling of change defection and damage assessment.
- Expected outcomes
- The methods will support improvements to the security and resiliency of the US energy infrastructure when exposed to climate change induced extreme weather, specifically the electrical power infrastructure in coastal and islanded regions.
- Intended beneficiaries
- Local residents, businesses and utility regulators, public and private utility companies, and energy policy makers will benefit from these new methods of analysis and the resulting improved performance of energy infrastructure.
- Subrecipient activities
- The recipient intends to subaward funds to new york university and CO-PI ghandehari masoud. Funds will be used to engage a graduate student and support the overall efforts of the proposed research such as assisting in the experimental and numerical modeling of advanced environmental modeling for power sectors.
