Description

Activities
This research will investigate and develop through a combination of systematic field and greenhouse measurements with trees and grasses, coupled to remotely sensed measurements, the impact of vegetative emissions and uptake in cities. IT will address the following questions:1. What is the CO2 atmospheric exchange in urban and suburban forests and managed landscapes, and do standard models based on rural ecosystems capture CO2 uptake and release fluxes in urban landscapes correctly and accurately.2. How do unique suburban characteristics - such as fragmentation and grass management practices - affect vegetative productivity and soil c fluxes at local and regional scales? Does refinement of plant functional type characterization and parameterization to reflect urban vegetation characteristics IM-prove the performance of light use efficiency models. This award leverages existing research infrastructure and unique resources available only at NIST, building on previous research and collaborations. IT will advance ground-based remote sensing technology, perform fundamental measurements in the field and in the controlled conditions of a greenhouse, and fuse a suite of remotely sensed observations. Advances in understanding and modeling of biogenic flows to and from the atmosphere in urban areas where, perhaps approximately one half of anthropogenic emissions are thought to offset by biogenic uptake. In december 2024, coincident with the american geophysical union annual meeting in washington DC, a workshop will be organized at NIST focused on measuring and modeling urban biosphere CO2 fluxes. IT will bring together experts from the remote sensing, ecology, micrometeorology, and plant physiology communities to discuss perspectives on the role of vegetation in urban emissions and examine the current state of the science and of measurement capabilities and unmet needs.
Expected outcomes
Refinement of measurement methodologies will contribute to the GHG measurement science community's tool set and increase public confidence in the science underlying GHG emissions quantification in urban areas. Newly developed techniques will be compared with existing methods, the results published in the open literature. Testing will use data obtained from NIST's forest optical reference for evaluating sensor technology, manipulative experiments, and satellite observations to improve understanding and models of urban vegetative carbon fluxes. The workshop to be held on the NIST campus will focus on vegetative urban emissions and uptake and will review current capabilities and identify unmet measurement needs.
Intended beneficiaries
Academia, local and state governments, and the private sector.
