Description
- Purpose
- The purpose of this grant is to assess the current state of recycling and reuse in the electronics sector and provide an architecture for the transition towards a circular economy in electronics sector with special attention to integrated circuits end of life treatment.
- Activities
- The project will combine literature research with expert interviews to understand typical electronic waste handling including traditional disposal, formal recycling, and informal disposal. The project will develop and refine a set of advanced, multidimensional economic and environmental metrics (economics by stakeholder, greenhouse gas emissions, water scarcity, resource use, waste generation,), to assess the current level of circularity on electronic chips. The research will assess the current state of transition towards the circular economy with respect to the reuse of chips in the U.S. And analyze possible transition scenarios, as well as their outcomes and impacts. The project will focus on the reuse of chips. IT will consider where reuse is already occurring and identify and test the potential environmental and economic impacts of circularity in the reuse of chips and key determinants in the U.S. Finally, the project will assess the feasibility, functional characteristics of standards that need to be put in place to enable the reuse of integrated circuits.expected outcome: the project will influence the transition to circularity in the electronics sector by both designing and testing the economic and environmental implications of the reuse of electronic chips. The outcomes of these analyses will provide tangible evidence and arguments for the reuse of those chips. Finally, the project will compile the key multi-dimensional indicators and metrics which will be needed to develop systems and standards for the end of life of electronic chips. Choosing appropriate indicators and metrics will facilitate a consistent and smooth transition towards the reuse of electronics components as IT will enable a thorough management of the process up to end of life.
- Intended beneficiaries
- The research will benefit U.S. Manufacturers and consumers by improving reuse and recycling of consumer electronics ? Saving energy and reducing emissions. A transition to a circular economy through the reuse of integrated circuits also entails systemic transformation of the design, production, and consumption phases, so that the value of integrated circuits can be maintained in the economy for as long as possible, while reducing environmental impact.
