Description

Purpose
The purpose of this project is to support a uniform approach between asme and ISO (standards development organizations) for model based engineering (MBE) of composite structures and the application of MBE to manufacturing, through harmonizing the definitions and approaches to the concepts behind composite manufacturing.
Activities
Proposed harmonization activities for ISO 10303 include updating ISO 10303-1767 composite constituent shape to add lines and areas for limited length or area indicators (llai) definition and add product and manufacturing information (PMI) for shape tolerances; updating ISO 103003-1770 part and zone laminate table to represent composite constituents for llai; and updating ISO 10303-1772 PLY orientation specification to add PMI for PLY angles.
Expected outcomes
The project should improve the design and manufacture of composite structures by providing a commonly understood vocabulary shared by the engineers who design composites for manufacture, and for tool vendors who provide the workbenches to automate the design and manufacture of those structures.
Intended beneficiaries
The research conducted under this proposal will further develop and enhance interoperability standards of critical importance to US industry. The research will be of significant value to the general public through technology transfer of the knowledge gained through standards development to ultimately support improved product manufacture and functionality.
