About this award

This Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Department of Transportation Maritime Administration (MARAD) under the Ballast Water Treatment Technologies program (CFDA 20.819) provides $250,000 to Monstrant Viam, Inc. to develop ballast water reception readiness engineering design guides and detailed designs for two leading U.S. Great Lakes vessel types. The project aims to advance the use of ballast water reception facilities in the Great Lakes region by creating technical specifications to interface vessels with port-based reception systems. The award period runs from July 2024 to July 2026 and includes three phases: 1) confirming the composition of the U.S. Great Lakes vessel fleet, 2) developing conceptual engineering designs for 'ballast water reception ready' vessel modifications that can obtain Approvals in Principle, and 3) completing detailed engineering designs and bills of materials for the two selected vessel types. The project's outputs are intended to benefit MARAD and support broader efforts to curtail aquatic invasive species in U.S. coastal waters.
