- This Cooperative Agreement award, provided by the U.S. Department of the Interior's Office of Subsistence Management under the Alaska Subsistence Management program (CFDA 15.636), will fund long-term monitoring of adult Chinook salmon abundance in the Copper River, Alaska from 2022-2025. The objective is to estimate the inriver abundance of Copper River Chinook salmon such that the estimate is within 25% of the true abundance 95% of the time. The $215,000 award to the Native Village of Eyak will...
- This Cooperative Agreement award of $499,823 from the U.S. Geological Survey's National and Regional Climate Adaptation Science Centers (CFDA 15.820) program supports a research project by the University of Alaska Fairbanks to document, quantify, and map the cumulative effects of climate change, food web changes, and habitat degradation on Yukon River salmon populations. The goal is to identify the most effective local and regional actions to support salmon recovery and the resilience of...
- This $682,107 Project Grant awarded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Pacific Coast Salmon Recovery Pacific Salmon Treaty Program (CFDA 11.438) is funding a multi-faceted effort to mitigate economic impacts from reductions in Chinook salmon harvests in Southeast Alaska. The key components of the program include: Hatchery fish marking, tagging, and evaluation; hatchery enhancement projects; and hatchery research. Sub-awards to entities like the Alaska...
- This Cooperative Agreement award from the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) Aquatic Resources Management program (CFDA 15.244) provides $102,702 to the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) to characterize rates and potential drivers of prespawn mortality in Yukon River chum salmon over a two-year period. The project aims to generate a correction factor that fisheries managers can apply to escapement data to more accurately estimate spawning salmon abundance and inform management decisions. Key...

THE AGREEMENT WILL DOCUMENT WHERE SUBSISTENCE USERS IN SOUTHEAST ALASKA HARVEST SOCKEYE SALMON AND TO UNDERSTAND THE TRADITIONAL ECOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE THAT GUIDES HOW COMMUNITIES SELECT FISHING LOCATIONS. BY ANALYZING LONG-TERM SUBSISTENCE AND PERSONAL USE PERMIT DATA AND PAIRING THOSE FINDINGS WITH RICH ETHNOGRAPHIC INFORMATION, THE STUDY WILL ILLUMINATE THE ENVIRONMENTAL, CULTURAL, SOCIAL, AND REGULATORY FACTORS THAT SHAPE HARVEST PATTERNS IN YAKUTAT, HOONAH, KLAWOCK, AND SITKA. THIS WORK RESPONDS DIRECTLY TO A PRIORITY INFORMATION NEED IN THE REGION: UNDERSTANDING HOW COMMUNITIES DISTRIBUTE SOCKEYE HARVESTS AMONG THE VARIOUS SALMON SYSTEMS AVAILABLE TO THEM. RESULTS WILL HELP FILL IMPORTANT DATA GAPS FOR STATE AND FEDERAL MANAGERS WHO RELY ON CURRENT, COMMUNITY-INFORMED INFORMATION TO ENSURE SUSTAINABLE SUBSISTENCE OPPORTUNITIES.
