The U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of International Labor Affairs (ILAB) awarded a $4,000,000 Cooperative Agreement under the International Labor Programs (CFDA 17.401) to Pact, Inc. The project titled "Watoto ni Hazina: Children are Treasure (WANIHA)" aims to improve implementation of laws, policies, and action plans to reduce child labor and improve acceptable working conditions in Tanzania's artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector in Geita region. Key activities include:
Improving national and local data collection on child labor and working conditions in ASGM through training of local authorities and civil society organizations.
Strengthening governance structures by enhancing coordination between local government, mining communities, and national systems.
Providing training to local government officials, mining workers, and community leaders on child labor laws, safe mining practices, and mercury use while building the capacity of local stakeholders to monitor, identify, and report instances of child labor and poor working conditions.
The project is expected to directly and indirectly benefit an estimated 6,000 participants, including women miners, mining communities, local government officials, and civil society organizations through capacity building, research, workshops, and training activities. Pact will collaborate with two local partner organizations, Rafiki SDO and TAWOMA, to implement the project activities.
