The U.S. Forest Service Region 1 – Northern Region awarded a $166,000 Cooperative Agreement to the Department of Parks & Recreation Idaho on September 23, 2025, under the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act (CFDA 10.665). The award will fund maintenance and improvement of non-motorized trails on National Forest System lands, with initial work focusing on eligible Idaho Centennial Trail sections in the North Zone of the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests, specifically between Wilderness Gateway and Kidd Lake and portions south of the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness.
Additionally, the cooperative agreement will support installation of signage on winter trail systems, primarily groomed snowmobile routes on National Forest Service lands across North Idaho. The agreement extends through September 15, 2035, allowing for multi-year implementation of these trail maintenance, improvement, and signage infrastructure projects. These activities align with the Secure Rural Schools Act's emphasis on resource restoration and community recreation improvements on or adjacent to national forest lands.
