The University of Kansas Center for Research Inc. was awarded a $7,775,000 cooperative agreement from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering Research Centers (CFDA 47.041) program to establish the EARTH (Environmentally Applied Refrigerant Technology Hub) center. EARTH will use a multidisciplinary team-science approach to develop technical and societal solutions to address key challenges in the HVACR ecosystem, including lowering HFC emissions, creating safe and environmentally-friendly refrigerant replacements, and improving HVACR energy efficiency. The project aims to enable the phasedown of high-GWP HFC refrigerants mandated by the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act. EARTH will collaborate with over 70 industry, academic, and government partners, including the University of South Dakota and University of Notre Dame, which received sub-awards to contribute specialized expertise in areas like refrigerant separation, molecular simulations, and postdoctoral mentoring. The 5-year award period runs from Sep 1, 2024 to Aug 31, 2029.
