Description

The university of tennessee and radiation monitoring devices, INC will collaborate throughout the project to develop new solid state radiation detection technology we will identify and develop a low cost, scalable, and robust polycrystalline based semiconductor with high radiation detection efficiency to equip the next generation of compact, energy efficient and low cost portable radiation detectors in this multidisciplinary student oriented project, we will use mathematical algorithms to identify next generation compounds with the physical and semiconducting properties required by the cwmd mission including stable elevated temperature operation, high radiation detection sensitivity, and able to survive harsh radiation environments we will develop new techniques for efficiently manufacturing novel materials, and design, assemble, and test prototypes that will ultimately lead to practical devices in addition to the practical outcomes, the project will contribute to the scientific knowledge base of new materials for radiation detection new low cost polycrystalline detector materials have the potential to replace the current technology of expensive single crystals that must be slowly grown from ultra pure starting materials unlike the currently available technology, our new materials will not require complex and expensive cooling for operation in high temperature environments additionally, their unique chemical composition will enable stable operation over long time periods their combination of high temperature operation, low cost, high detection efficiency, and scalable manufacturing will support widespread implementation of radiation detection devices and thereby strongly support the cwmd mission to protect the homeland from radiological and nuclear threats the focus on student engagement with private industry will help create a new talented generation of scientists and engineers needed to advance the field of radiation detection and nuclear security
