Description
Novel low cost, robust and high sensitivity polycrystalline radiation detectorsabstract we propose to develop polycrystalline ION conducting solid electrolytes for the purpose of radiation detection while this initial choice may seem counterintuitive, considering the large effective masses of ions compared to electrons, and the very high concentrations of point defects that could capture photogenerated charges, we aim to demonstrate that IT is possible to obtain high sensitivity response with above band GAP irradiation and thereby enable the design of inexpensive, sensitive, robust, and scalable radiation detectors alongside demonstrating proof of technological viability for this new technology, our proposed research will aim to develop material selection and manufacturing guidelines that will act as a foundation for future applications, leveraging polycrystalline ionic solid state conductors as radiation detectors this allows for the exploration of novel sensing mechanisms in polycrystalline materials with unique opportunities in terms of high sensitivity, coupled with extended device stability even under harsh environments elevated temperature, high radiation intensities doses, high pressure, and chemically aggressive environments while allowing for ease of fabrication, low cost, non toxicity, low noise large band GAP , and rapid response the anticipated impact of this study will lead to development of new materials that can result in compact and low cost solid state detector devices with high selectivity and sensitivity response in open environments under various radiation sources this will support the long term DHS needs and the cwmd mission space for the development of detection technologies to help prevent nuclear threats both domestically and abroad additionally, owing to the unique high temperature stability properties of these ceramics, this opens new opportunities for long term solid state monitoring technologies in harsh environmental conditions
