The U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Justice Programs Victims of Crime awarded a $500,000 Cooperative Agreement to Providence St. Mary Medical Center to implement the High Desert Sexual Assault Survivor Resilience Program. The purpose is to increase the number of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) providing local, timely, and high-quality medical forensic examinations for adult and adolescent victims of sexual assault in the geographically isolated High Desert region of San Bernardino County, California. Project activities will include recruiting, training, and hiring SANEs; equipping a dedicated forensic examination space; establishing a multidisciplinary Sexual Assault Response Team; and conducting community outreach and sexual violence prevention education. Partners Against Violence, a local victim services provider, will serve as a subrecipient to offer wraparound services, team training, and assist with community engagement. The award, funded through the Sexual Assault Forensic Examinations (CFDA 16.053) program, aims to decrease trauma, improve prosecution rates, and empower survivors in this underserved area.
