About this award
The Virginia State Police received a $1,320,000 Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) under the NICS Act Record Improvement Program (CFDA 16.813). The funding will be used to purchase and install 60 LiveScan units in courthouses, police departments, and sheriff's offices across Virginia. These LiveScan units will improve the communication and transfer of criminal arrest booking fingerprints, sex offender information, and support other common LiveScan processes such as employment background checks. The project aims to enhance the state's integrated biometrics identification system and sex offender management system by providing automated electronic updates on offender names, addresses, employers, schools, and vehicles. This grant award supports the program's goal of improving the completeness, accuracy, and automation of criminal justice records reported to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).
