About this award
The U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) awarded a $499,931 Cooperative Agreement under the Public Safety Partnership and Community Policing Grants (CFDA 16.710) program to The Ohio State University (OSU). Over a two-year period from October 2024 to September 2026, OSU will partner with law enforcement personnel in at least five major cities to develop and implement products and resources to support the expansion of a place-based violence reduction strategy called Place Network Investigations (PNI). The project consists of three phases: (1) initial development of a PNI guidebook, self-assessment tools, video case studies, and an interactive website; (2) pilot-testing the resources with police partners and refining the products based on their feedback; and (3) comprehensive dissemination through webinars, podcasts, and national conference presentations, with a focus on engaging first-line supervisors. This funding will enable OSU to provide law enforcement agencies and their jurisdictional partners with tools and strategies to effectively implement the PNI approach and reduce violence and chronic crime problems in historically underserved neighborhoods.
Description
"the ohio state university will use FY24 CPD funding to partner with knowledgeable police personnel in at least five major cities to develop and implement products and resources for law enforcement agencies and their jurisdictional partners to support the expansion of a promising place-based violence reduction strategy called place network investigations (PNI). PNI is a holistic strategy to reduce violence and other chronic crime problems. The core components of PNI include place-focused police investigations in persistent violent hotspots, problem-solving and prioritization of all local government resources to block crime opportunities, and community-led revitalization within historically underserved neighborhoods. This project is comprised of three phases. Phase 1 includes the initial development of products and resources, including a PNI guidebook, self-assessment tools, video case-study vignettes and other associated products, and an interactive PNI website. Phase 2 provides an opportunity to pilot-test the resources with police partners and refine products based on their feedback. Phase 3 features a comprehensive dissemination plan, including webinars, podcasts, national conference presentations, and a focus on first-line supervisors. The OSU team will partner with law enforcement officials from multiple agencies for their direct involvement in all three project phases.
