Description

"the new york university will use FY24 CPD funding to develop a series of written and video resources that integrate scientific research and agency innovation to address common challenges, elevate promising practices, and celebrate the contributions of women trailblazers in the profession of law enforcement. Women make up less than 13% of sworn officers in the U.S., and only 3% of police leadership positions are held by women. This is not just an issue of gender equity; a growing body of research highlights the unique value of women officers. For example, evidence shows women officers use force and excessive force, have better relationships with diverse communities, are named in community complaints and lawsuits less often, and are associated with better outcomes for crime victims. We launched the 30X30 initiative in 2021 to address the under-representation of women in the profession. We partner with agencies across the country to identify inherent biases and ensure the unique needs of women officers are met, focusing on improving both the representation of women and their experiences within the department. Our hope through these efforts is to increase the representation of women in police recruit classes to 30% by the year 2030. That 30% number is intentional. The theory of representative bureaucracy states that IT is only when an under-represented group reaches 30% that they can positively impact an organization for their benefit. We are in the final stages of analyzing three years of agency reports for trends and promising practices and have a clear understanding of what challenges agencies are facing, as well as excellent insights into what seems to be working best based on the experiences of our agencies.
