The north alabama public service training center (napstc) at the university of north alabama serves the training needs of the law enforcement, fire and rescue, emergency medical, emergency management, public health, and public service sector within the region of north alabama, southern tennessee, and eastern mississippi. The napstc recognizes the great value and utility of DE-escalation training for law enforcement officers and other first responders to give them the tools, skills, knowledge, and techniques to correctly assess the situation, identify the nature of the threat, and apply proper verbal and nonverbal techniques to safely defuse the situation without the need for the use of force. Napstc DE-escalation training program seeks to train 80-100 officers per month in the nationally recognized integrating communications, assessment, and tactics (icat) program developed by the police executive research forum both at our facilities in florence, alabama but also on location at participating agencies throughout the region. At the completion of the award, approximately 4,500 law enforcement officers will be trained in DE-escalation.
