The proposed DE-escalation training through active learning (detal) assessment and research center at western illinois university (WIU) is internet-based and regionally housed to serve the culturally diverse communities and police organizations in west central illinois, the larger midwest region, and beyond. Situated to provide tailored support to rural, suburban, and urban policing organizations, IT offers virtual training across the state and region (e.g., missouri safety center, police training institute university of illinois). This project will: 1) develop and evaluate instruction modality options for officers, 2) develop criteria and evaluate strategy for individual officer DE-escalation certification, 3) engage community members in DE-escalation training, 4) create a training course for police to practice engaging with community members, 5) expand the perspective of trauma informed interactions for DE-escalation and officer wellness, and 6) expand the perspective of group-biases (e.g., implicit bias content) and cultural perspectives for DE-escalation and officer wellness.
