The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 4 awarded $1.77M to the Town of North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, under the Brownfields Multipurpose, Assessment, Revolving Loan Fund, and Cleanup Cooperative Agreements program (CFDA 66.818) on July 1, 2025. The four-year performance period extends through June 30, 2029. This funding supports the remediation of one brownfield site—real property whose development or reuse may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants. The town will conduct cleanup activities authorized under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) Section 104(k)(3), competitively procure and direct a qualified environmental professional to perform environmental site activities, and develop a Community Involvement Plan and administrative record for the site.
Deliverables include remediation of the brownfield site, quarterly community meetings, finalization of a brownfield cleanup alternatives analysis, submission of quarterly progress reports through EPA's Assessment, Cleanup and Redevelopment Exchange System (ACRES), and completion of the Property Profile Form. The recipient will receive no subawards under this cooperative agreement. The funding benefits residents, business owners, and stakeholders in and near North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, supporting environmental remediation efforts as authorized under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
