About this award

Federal Cooperative Agreement Summary

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 1 awarded a $2.0 million Cooperative Agreement under the Congressionally Mandated Projects program (CFDA 66.202) to the Mechanic Falls Sanitary District on March 1, 2026, for implementation of wastewater infrastructure improvements in Mechanic Falls, Maine. The award, authorized under the 2024 Consolidated Appropriations Act, funds the execution and implementation of a sewer replacement project designed to eliminate a significant source of inflow and infiltration within the municipal collection system.

The project deliverables include the replacement of leaking sewers on Clifford, First, Third, Fourth, and Fifth Streets, with rerouting of some services to Second Street, as well as replacement of the treatment plant influent pumping station to increase system capacity. These infrastructure improvements are expected to decrease the volume of untreated wastewater released to the environment, reduce combined sewer overflow (CSO) events, and eliminate a dangerous operational access point in the influent pump station. The project is scheduled for completion by June 30, 2028. No subawards have been incorporated into this assistance agreement.
