About this award
The Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) awarded the Mississippi Department of Mental Health $38.904 million under the Block Grants for Prevention and Treatment of Substance Abuse (CFDA 93.959) on October 1, 2025, for the period through September 30, 2027.
The award supports substance abuse prevention, treatment, and recovery services across Mississippi. The recipient passes funds through to sub-grantees delivering primary prevention programs aimed at delaying substance use onset among youth and reducing community prevalence of substance abuse, including educational outreach, interactive workshops, substance-free activities, screening initiatives in schools and community centers, and community standards advocacy. Sub-grantees implement residential Level 3 treatment services for uninsured and underserved adults with substance use disorders, with objectives to reduce readmissions within one year of discharge and ensure treatment access within 14 days of referral. Additional services include transitional residential programming providing person-centered skill development for community reintegration and vocational rehabilitation access. The award funds a Congregational Recovery Outreach Program partnering with faith communities, particularly African American congregations, to reduce stigma around substance use disorders, communicable diseases, and mental health issues. Consumer education programs deliver evidence-based support through Family-to-Family, In Our Own Voice, Peer-to-Peer, Family and Friends, and Provider Education offerings to individuals living with mental illness, caregivers, and family members at no cost.
Place of performance is Jackson, Mississippi. Sub-recipients include Vicksburg Family Development Service Inc., Pine Belt Mental Healthcare Resources, Mississippi Public Health Institute, Lifecore Health Group (Northeast Mental Health-Mental Retardation Commission), Region 4 Mental Health, Region 6 Mental Health Center, Community Counseling Services (Region Seven Mental Health Intellectual Disabilities Commission), and Communicare (North Mississippi Commission On Mental Illness & Retardation).
