The national academy of sciences report entitled, proactive policing: effects on crime and communities (2018) concluded that offender-focused proactive policing programs, such as pulling levers, repeat offender programs and contacts by officers in the field, can reduce crime rates, particularly violent crime. The roanoke police department has implemented violent crime reduction strategies and technologies to reduce violent crime, particularly gun crime. With these efforts, homicides have been reduced significantly from 2023 when comparing to year to date 2024 (so far, around 60% decrease). Implementation of stratified policing, zone accountability at the supervisor level and smartforce documentation/information sharing have assisted with driving down the homicide numbers. Technology implementation has significantly contributed to investigations, offender identification, communication. The roanoke police department is currently building a real time crime center with the objective of further reducing crime in our community. In addition to improving the crime reduction efforts in roanoke, the goal is to provide additional technology based solutions to enhance layers of detection for gun related crime.
