Description

Public broadcasting services teaching climate change (TCC): k - 12 online professional development from PBS and NASA in the 20 years since NASA scientist james hansen's landmark 1988 congressional testimony on climate change, the public has grown increasingly aware of and concerned about climate change. Students are aware of IT, too; surveys of middle school students in the U.S., U.K. And australia confirm that climate change is a major fear, above cancer, terrorism and war. Schools and educators have a responsibility to provide students with accurate, user-friendly information and to encourage students' interest in stem careers. This points to a need for meaningful, grade level-appropriate global climate change education (gcce) professional development for teachers. Since 2000, PBS has developed a robust infrastructure for online teacher professional development, offering 130 fully facilitated, online, asynchronous, award-winning, multimedia courses. PBS has the unique distribution capability to reach educators nationwide via 67 local PBS station partners. Last year pbstl had nearly 12,000 enrollments from 2,000+ schools. The program engages 10 state departments of education and partners with 27 universities to offer graduate credit. Evaluation indicates pbstl has a positive effect on teacher attitudes and practices. PBS proposes to make a distinctive contribution to NASA's impressive education portfolio by developing and nationally promoting two online courses that will leverage NASA data and resources. All 67 participating PBS stations will promote the courses, and four stations will perform additional in-dept promotion in their communities with support and modest stipends from PBS; their results will be shared with other stations for possible replication.
