Description
Global climate change education (GCCE) summary: the north dakota association of tribal colleges (NDATC) proposes to utilize NASA technologies and resources to establish a climate change education initiative among its six member tcus. The goal of this project is to enhance the tcus capacity to educate their constituents on the science of climate change, identify vulnerabilities, and mitigation strategies specific to indian country. The target audience for this project is our tribal college faculty and students. Our goals are to: (1) increase the capacity for learning and teaching climate change science in the tcus; (2) increase the understanding of climate change science and what IT means to the tribes in the northern plains; and (3) broaden the tribal college participation in climate change research through expanding and leveraging new and existing partnerships. We will accomplish goal 1 by installing remote sensing technology onto our campuses and providing training in these technologies through focused workshops. We will accomplish goal 2 by developing three new courses into our TCU curriculum. The courses will be; introduction to climate change, introduction to remote sensing, and geospatial technologies for research. We will accomplish goal 3 by providing a TCU faculty sabbatical at the national center for atmospheric research. By implementing this project we will assist NASA in meeting the recommendations put forth in the national academies report, `rising above the gathering storm . We will improve teaching and learning about climate change on our TCU campuses; increase the number of underrepresented minorities using NASA earth observation data models to analyze climate change; increase the number of students prepared for employment or entering graduate programs in fields related to climate change; and increase access to high quality global climate change education among our tribal communities.
