This SBIR Phase I contract was awarded by NASA's Shared Services Center to Apre Instruments Inc., a for-profit manufacturer of optical metrology instruments. The $125,000 firm-fixed-price contract is for the development of an "innovative, low coherence probe for rapid measurement of free-form optical surfaces" using a novel spectrally controlled interferometry technique. The key innovations include a high surface slope acceptance angle up to 20 degrees (potentially 60 degrees) and...
This is a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract awarded by NASA to Optipro Systems, LLC, a manufacturer of precision optics fabrication equipment and metrology systems. The $124,961 award will support the design, manufacture, and testing of a precision rotary axis for Optipro's Ultraform Finishing (UFF) optical fabrication platform. The goal is to improve the capability to rapidly remove residual grinding and machining marks, as well as sub-surface damage, on X-ray optical...
This is a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract awarded by the Shared Services Center of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Optipro Systems, LLC, a manufacturer of precision optics fabrication equipment and metrology systems. The $150,000 firm-fixed-price contract is for the development of a sub-nanometer coordinate measuring machine (CMM) for mirror surface metrology, with a targeted completion date of February 2, 2024. As a prime contractor,...
This is a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract awarded by NASA's Shared Services Center to Apre Instruments Inc., a for-profit optical metrology company. The $124,679 firm-fixed-price contract involves developing a "low coherence, spectrally modulated, spherical wavefront probe for nanometer level free-form metrology." This novel interferometric technology aims to address the metrology challenges associated with measuring freeform optics with large surface...
NASA has awarded a $124,960 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract to Optimax Systems, Inc. to develop a deflectometry system for improving the efficiency of manufacturing freeform optics. Freeform optics are an integral part of NASA's future optical systems, and reducing the cost of freeform manufacturing is crucial. The goal of this project is to create a multi-camera, multi-monitor deflectometry system that can be integrated into the manufacturing process to...
This SBIR Phase II contract was awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center to Apre Instruments Inc., a for-profit manufacturing company. The contract, valued at $730,603.00, is for the development of an innovative low-coherence probe capable of rapidly measuring freeform optical surfaces with nanometer-level precision and high slope acceptance angles. This capability meets NASA's need to measure optical components ranging from 0.5 cm to 6 cm in...
This is a federal grant award from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) to develop grazing incidence optics for the X-Ray Surveyor mission concept. The $551,983.28 award will fund research into combining two technologies - thin piezoelectric film adjustable optics and differential deposition - to fabricate high-resolution Wolter-I mirror segments that can meet the mission's 0.5 arcsecond imaging and 2.3 square meter effective...
This is a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II contract awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Optipro Systems, LLC, a small business manufacturer of precision optics fabrication equipment and metrology systems. The $900,000 Firm Fixed Price contract is for the development of a "Wide Range Interferometric Probe" to support optics research and development. The contract is set aside for small businesses and the work will be performed in...
This contract was awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to develop new high-precision X-ray telescope mirror technology. The $3,000,000.00 grant supports research on improving methods for stress-field mirror correction, compensation of mirror distortion caused by coating stress, stabilization and smoothing of mirror coatings, and enhanced mirror figure metrology. This work is intended to enable thin shell mirrors...
This is a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Arctic Slope Technical Services, Inc., an Alaskan Native Corporation-owned small disadvantaged business. The $125,000 firm-fixed-price contract is to demonstrate the feasibility of using selective laser melting (SLM) to produce a 3-meter symmetrical radius of curvature isogrid mirror substrate for use in ultraviolet, optical, and infrared (UVOIR) telescopes....

ADVANCED X-RAY OBSERVATORIES SUCH AS IXO AND GENX WILL REQUIRE THOUSANDS OF THIN SHELL MIRROR SEGMENTS PRODUCED BY REPLICATION USING CONVEX MANDRELS. QUALITY AND COST EFFECTIVE MANUFACTURING OF THESE SEGMENTS IS PROPORTIONAL TO THE SPEED AND EFFECTIVENESS OF THE METROLOGY WE USE IN MANUFACTURING AND THE ABILITY TO USE ACCURATE MEASUREMENTS TO ENABLE DETERMINISTIC FABRICATION. AOS PROPOSES DEVELOPMENT OF AN EFFICIENT AND ACCURATE METROLOGY SYSTEM TO ENABLE THE MANUFACTURING OF SEMENTS WITH PERFORMANCE OF 0.5 ARC-SECOND OR BETTER. A CURENT METHOD TO TEST SUCH MANDRELS IS TO STITCH MULTIPLE MERIDIONAL PROFILES ACQUIRED USING A LARGE APERTURE PLANO INTERFEROMETER AND AN AIR-BEARING ACTUATED PARTHOLDER. AOS WILL ADVANCE THIS METHOD, BY BUILDING AN AUTOMATED PLATFORM, DRIVEN BY CUSTOM DEVELOPED SOFTWARE, AND IMPLEMENTING IMPROVEMENTS THAT WILL ENHANCE BOTH THE ACCURACY AND EFFICIENCY OF THE TEST.
