This is a SBIR Phase II contract awarded by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) to Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI), a small business based in Andover, Massachusetts. The $1,249,988 firm-fixed-price contract is for the development of an "ON-DEMAND ASCENT (ADVANCED SPACECRAFT ENERGETIC NON-TOXIC PROPELLANT) PRODUCTION SYSTEM" to address technology gaps and scale up the production of high-purity energetic compounds using microreactors. This contract is set aside for small businesses....
This contract was awarded to Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI), a for-profit research and development company, to develop a novel launch propulsion technology for rapid insertion of nano/micro satellites (5-100 kg) into low Earth orbit. The technology aims to lower the current state-of-the-art launch stage cost by a factor of 2. The work is being performed in collaboration with Purdue University. The contract, a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II award from the National Aeronautics...
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) awarded a $124,950.00 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program Phase I contract to Creare LLC, a small business engineering research and development company, to develop a robust, lightweight cryogenic screen channel liquid acquisition device (LAD) for refueling spacecraft in microgravity environments. The novel LAD configuration aims to reliably maintain the pore structure of the screen near bonding joints and provide mechanical...
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) awarded a $124,995.00 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract to Pioneer Astronautics, doing business as Pioneer Invention, a small business space technology company. The contract is to demonstrate the Liquid Sorption Pump (LSP), a new technology for extracting carbon dioxide (CO2) from the Martian atmosphere to support in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) systems. The LSP uses cooled propanol to absorb CO2 from the...
Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI), a for-profit research and development company, was awarded a $124,921.00 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program Phase I contract by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center. The contract is for the design, development, and demonstration of an innovative high-performance, green, storable hybrid propellant system for use in a high mass fraction launch vehicle for small satellites. The hybrid system utilizes a composite...
This is a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center to Busek Co., Inc., a small business manufacturer of spacecraft propulsion systems. The contract, with a ceiling value of $124,990, is for the design and demonstration of an advanced iodine feed system for Hall effect thrusters, ion engines, cathodes, and other plasma generators. The innovative feed system features a low-mass plastic...
This is a $125,000 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Plasma Processes, LLC, a small business manufacturer of coatings and propulsion technologies. The contract is for the design, fabrication, and demonstration of a miniaturized propulsion system compatible with non-toxic, green monopropellants for small spacecraft. This addresses a key challenge in the widespread implementation of small satellites -...
This is a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract awarded by the Shared Services Center, a civilian agency, to Flight Works, Inc., a for-profit aerospace manufacturer. The $124,969 firm-fixed-price contract supports the development and demonstration of a low-cost, pump-fed, non-catalytic 1-5 Newton-class thruster using the AF-M315E "green" propellant. The goal is to provide real delta-V capability (over 1 km/s) for small secondary payloads and CubeSats, reducing...
Gloyer-Taylor Laboratories Inc. (GTL), a manufacturer of goods, was awarded a $124,997.00 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to develop a high-performance propellant management device (PMD) and liquid acquisition device (LAD) using advanced composite materials. The goal is to achieve mass savings and improved reliability compared to traditional metal-based manufacturing techniques, in support of future...
This federal contract award to Flight Works, Inc., a small business manufacturer of aerospace components and systems, is for the development of a low-cost, compact, low-tank pressure, high-performance propulsion system using LMP-103S green propellant. The $124,866 SBIR Phase I contract, awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), aims to expand Flight Works' micropump-fed propulsion technology to create a high delta-V capability system suitable for secondary payloads...

WHILE EVALUATING LUNAR ASCENT AND DESCENT STAGE PROPELLANT ACQUISITION OPTIONS IN 2008 AND 2009 FOR NASA GRC, IES CONCEIVED A NOVEL, FLEXIBLE SCREEN PROPELLANT MANAGEMENT DEVICE (PMD). THE CONCEPT PROVIDES A HIGHLY SIMPLIFIED AND EASY TO BUILD PMD AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO A TOTAL COMMUNICATION DEVICE OR ONE INCORPORATING A START BASKET. WATER BENCH TESTS WITH A VERY PRIMITIVE PROTOTYPE YIELDED ENCOURAGING RESULTS, AND ADDITIONAL, SIMPLE BENCH-LEVEL TESTING WITH LN2 WAS ALSO ENCOURAGING. AN OPPORTUNITY EXISTS TO REFINE THE CONCEPT, DEVELOP A LARGER, MORE FLIGHT-LIKE APPARATUS, AND TEST IT IN A CRYOGENIC TANK CURRENTLY BEING DESIGNED AND SUBSEQUENTLY INTENDED FOR USE ON THE CRYOGENIC ORBITAL TESTBED (CRYOTE) EXPERIMENT. DESIGNING A FULL SIZE FLIGHT QUALIFIABLE FLEXIBLE SCREEN PMD UNDER A PHASE 1 SBIR EFFORT, FOLLOWED BY HARDWARE FABRICATION, QUALIFICATION AND FLIGHT DEMONSTRATION ON A FLIGHT TEST PLATFORM CONCURRENTLY IN DEVELOPMENT, WILL ALLOW THIS CONCEPT TO BE DEMONSTRATED FOR A FRACTION OF THE COST THAT WOULD BE REQUIRED FOR A DEDICATED FLIGHT OF A FLEXIBLE PMD EXPERIMENT. THE CONCEPT TRL SHOULD MOVE FROM 3 TO 5 DURING PHASE 1, AND 5 TO 7 DURING PHASE 2.
