- This is a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract awarded by NASA's Shared Services Center to Microlink Devices Inc., a minority-owned, Asian-Pacific American-owned small business manufacturer. The $125,000 firm-fixed-price contract is for the development of a technology to enable the manufacture of high-efficiency (>40%), quadruple-junction solar cells on lightweight germanium (Ge) substrates. The key innovation is the use of a new semiconductor alloy, InGaAsN, as the 1.18...
- Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI), a small business, was awarded a $124,932 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to develop new solar cells based on a ferroelectric semiconductor absorber material. This novel material is expected to yield a 30% increase in efficiency and 20% increase in specific power compared to current triple-junction III-V solar cells. The proposed cells would leverage a unique charge separation...
- This federal grant award from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Arizona State University (ASU) is for a three-year project to develop a high-efficiency, high-temperature InGaN-based tandem solar cell designed to operate above 25% efficiency at temperatures above 400°C. The goal is to enable transformational improvements in solar power generation capabilities for space applications. The $593,533.24 grant leverages ASU's expertise in III-nitride materials and device...
- This is a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract awarded by NASA's Ames Research Center to Firefly Technologies, a woman-owned small business, for the development of a wide-bandgap gap-based space solar cell capable of efficient operation at temperatures above 300°C. The objective is to enhance the efficiency of the solar cell by introducing InGaP quantum wells within the active region, enabling the harvesting of low-energy photons that are normally lost. Successful...
- This is a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract awarded by NASA's Shared Services Center to Angstrom Designs Inc., a for-profit manufacturer of specialized electronic and lighting systems based in Santa Barbara, California. The $749,860 fixed-price contract is for the development of a solid-state, large-area, pulsed, solar simulator (SSLAPSS) that can simulate the AM0 (air mass zero) response of single, dual, 3, 4, 5, and 6-junction solar cells. The prototype developed in...
- This federal contract award to the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), valued at $201,551.27, supports the development of InAlAs semiconductor materials for high-performance space photovoltaic cells. The research aims to improve upon current space solar cell technologies by developing an InAlAsSb lattice-matched to InP that could enable a triple-junction cell design with over 37% efficiency and high specific power. This work is particularly relevant for space applications, as the InP...
- The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) awarded a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program Phase I contract to Lightspin Technologies Inc., a small disadvantaged business, to develop a new generation of Single Photon Avalanche Diode (SPAD) array devices for deep space optical communications. The $124,999.00 firm fixed-price contract aims to produce a photomultiplier chip SPAD array device capable of precision detection of single photons with sub-100 picosecond timing...
- Microlink Devices Inc., a minority-owned small business, was awarded a $125,000 firm-fixed-price contract from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. The contract is for Phase I development of a phosphide-based four-junction (4J) solar cell that will enhance the performance and capabilities of solar photovoltaic arrays for future NASA missions. Relative to the incumbent gallium indium...
- This is a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Intelliepi IR, Inc., a small business manufacturer of advanced infrared detector materials. The contract, valued at $900,000.00, aims to further develop high-performance infrared epitaxy materials based on Type II strained layer superlattice (SLS) technology for large-format, space-based sensor applications. The goal is to achieve at least 40% quantum...
- This federal contract award, NNX15AQ79H, was granted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Tufts University, a private research university located in Medford, Massachusetts. The contract, valued at $272,111.30, is for the development of thermophotovoltaic (TPV) devices to be used in static radioisotope generators for deep space missions. The research aims to address the challenge of growing III-V semiconducting compounds containing bismuth to enable long-wavelength TPV...
SPIRE SEMICONDUCTOR PROPOSES TO MAKE AN INGAAS-BASED THREE-JUNCTION (3J) TANDEM THERMOPHOTOVOLTAIC (TPV) CELL TO UTILIZE MORE OF THE BLACKBODY SPECTRUM (FROM A GPHS) EFFICIENTLY. SEMI-INSULATING INP WAFERS WILL BE USED FOR MONOLITHICALLY INTEGRATED MODULE (MIM)COMPATIBILITY AND TO ACHIEVE LOW FREE-CARRIER ABSORPTION. IN PHASE 1, WE WILL DESIGN, EPITAXIALLY GROW, AND PROCESS LARGE AREA SINGLE JUNCTION TEST CELLS FOR EACH OF THE THREE BANDGAPS PROPOSED (TO EVALUATE MATERIAL QUALITY), AS WELL AS FOR A FULL TANDEM CELL STRUCTURE. IN PHASE 2, WE WOULD FURTHER REFINE THE STRUCTURE AND INCORPORATE THE MATERIAL INTO MIM MODULES.
