About this award

This $80,000.00 firm fixed-price purchase order was awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Langley Research Center to Florida State University (FSU) to conduct additional aeroacoustic measurements of leading-edge slat systems. This work supports NASA's Advanced Air Transport Technology (AATT) project, which aims to develop technologies to improve the energy efficiency and environmental compatibility of fixed-wing transport aircraft. The measurements will provide experimental data to validate high-fidelity computational noise prediction tools, a key capability for designing new low-noise solutions for aircraft high-lift systems. This contract does not utilize a set-aside. FSU has a diverse portfolio of federal contract and grant awards, leveraging its expertise in areas like physical sciences and engineering to support cutting-edge R&D for various government agencies.

Description

Additional aeroacoustic measurements of leading-edge slat for computational validation 1.0 introduction/background:nasas advanced air transport technology (AATT) project conducts research with the goal of exploring and developing technologies and concepts to revolutionize the energy efficiency and environmental compatibility of fixed wing transport aircraft. A key technical challenge the project is trying to address is to reduce the high-lift system noise during landing approach by 4 DB (on a component basis) with minimal impact on weight and performance. With a primary focus on the N+3 generation vehicles that are three generations beyond the current state of the art (generation N) and that require mature technology solutions in the 2025 to 2035 timeframe, accurate and sufficiently validated noise prediction tools derived from high-fidelity computations will form a core ingredient to developing new noise reduction concepts to achieve this goal. An additional key ingredient includes an expanded knowledge base in the form of experimental data that is crucial to conceiving and designing the low-noise solutions.
