Description

Custom vacuum chamber this item is a custom-designed and -built vacuum chamber intended to create a pressure environment suitable for testing a new brine water recovery technology called the coiled brine recovery assembly (cobra). All NASA requirements for this chamber are documented on a specification control drawing, JSC drawing number SLY36157457. The purpose of the specification control drawing is to specify those dimensions and features necessary for the chamber to function properly, while allowing enough leeway for the vendor to detail the design for manufacturability and structural integrity. The drawing also includes adequate detail to allow several different vendors to supply competitive bids. Vendors were asked to bid on one of two possible end-items, preferably both: one is the -701 configuration which is just the chamber itself, the second is the -702 configuration which is the chamber plus seven internal and external mounting panels. In either case, the chamber is cubic with internal dimensions of 24X24X24 inches, and is fabricated of 316/316L stainless steel. After fabrication, the assembly(IES) must be passivated in a nitric acid bath per SAE AMS2700 type 6 or type 7, or astm A967 nitric 2 or nitric 3. The chamber includes two threaded pipe ports for connection of gauges, vacuum pump, and relief valve; four mounting feet to allow IT to stand on a bench top; four flanged ports for fluid and electrical interfaces; and a hinged access door made of transparent acrylic to allow clear viewing of tests. Vacuum capability of the chamber must be equal to, or better than, 1 torr pressure at 10-6 ATM CM3/s leak rate. IT must also be designed to withstand 15 psig of positive pressure. The vendor must proof-pressure test the chamber to 1.3 x maximum design pressure, and furnish a test report.
