Description
The purpose of this purchase order is to transfer funding to the rhode island department of transportation to promote the development of a ZIP merge project exchange of ideas on safety. The proposed study will examine the vehicle bottleneck issue at work zones. The purpose of this study is to help achieve the mission stated in the rhode island strategic highway safety plan to reduce fatalities and serious injuries caused by aggressive driving. A study is needed to explore the effective means to encourage and educate drivers to merge at work zones and discourage inappropriate behavior. International collaboration and cooperation will be sought to test and evaluate the impacts of a CDV VMS trailer treatment on vehicle headway and driving speed of drivers of different nationalities under different traffic and road conditions. IT is expected that this study will help drivers maintain safe vehicle headways, identify the causes of tailgating, find effective treatments for tailgating, and ultimately reduce injuries and fatalities caused by rear-end crashes. Objective: help achieve the mission stated in the rhode island strategic highway safety plan. Analyze the design with strong focus on driver behavior issues and develop micro and macroscopic simulation of the system performance. Design messages to be posted on fixed and electronic signs to encourage drivers maintaining proper vehicle ZIP merging behaviors. Identify potential field study locations related to work zones and recommend to ridot a ZIP merge treatment. Results and timeline: this study will provide rhode island transportation management authorities with a comprehensive report regarding the ZIP-merging potential. A special VMS trailer will be delivered from the czech republic to ridot for evaluation from january to december 2010.
