The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) awarded a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program Phase I contract to Microelectronics Research Development Corporation (MICRO-RDC), a for-profit organization, to develop a radiation-hardened-by-design (RHBD) encryption engine for use in future NASA missions. The $124,901.00 firm fixed-price contract will fund research and development of a data security application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) that can implement common encryption protocols like Triple DES, RSA, Blowfish, Twofish, and the primary target of 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). The goal is to create a radiation-hardened encryption engine that can reliably secure data for space applications, including deep space and low Earth orbit implementations. This SBIR contract is a small business set-aside.
