About this award

This federal contract award, valued at $288,164.60, was granted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the Trustees of Union College in Schenectady, New York. The award is for a research project focused on conducting laboratory diffusion experiments to constrain the closure temperature of key isotopic systems in iron meteorites. This will help develop a clearer picture of the sequence and timing of early planetary processes by optimizing the utility of multiple isotopic systems for modeling thermal histories of iron meteorite parent bodies. The contract does not have a set-aside designation. The research project aims to advance the understanding of the earliest days of our solar system by leveraging accurate and precise radiometric dating techniques.

Description

Our understanding of the earliest days of our solar system depends crucially on accurate and precise radiometric dating. Different isotope systems constrain the ages of separate geochemical and physical processes occurring in planetary objects. Being able to use multiple isotopic systems (such as 182HF/182W, 107PD/107AG and 207PB/206PB) in tandem can help develop a clearer picture of the sequence and timing of early planetary processes. Accurate knowledge of the closure temperature of these isotopic systems is required to optimize their utility for modeling thermal histories of iron meteorite parent bodies, however, robust experimental constraints on these closure temperatures is lacking. Here we propose to perform laboratory diffusion experiments to constrain the closure temperature(S) of key isotopic systems in iron meteorites. The experimental results can be used in combination with measured ages of phases in meteorites to constrain models of the thermal histories of iron meteorite parent bodies.
