Description

2015 NASA robotic mining competition grant application for minority serving institutions the areas of applied science, programming, and engineering do not make up a significant proportion of our undergraduate population. York college hopes to use this project to strengthen those areas within the college community. This opportunity would also allow US to prove that our diverse student body can compete on a national level with other universities in the field of robotics. Successful completion of this project would also allow US, as a senior college, to stand out among the 23 other city universities (CUNY) institutions in the new york metropolitan area, as well as bolster our commitment to providing a stem pathway for underserved communities. If accepted into the competition, our entry would build upon internal initiatives (i.e., the york robotic initiative) and NASA sponsored programs such as our semaa site designation. So far, the college has been able to kindle the imaginations for thousands of grade, and middle school students by hosting this NASA sponsored program for over five years. As a volunteer instructor for the semaa program at york college, daniel has experienced the JOY and wonder that the world of science and technology brings to those who first experience IT. Many of the students who complete the semaa aerospace education laboratory program have gone on to join the robotics initiative, summer workshops. By tapping those students who have a solid interest in the field of robotics since they were very young, our entry into the RMC will truly be unique. Our student builders will have been with US since their very first involvement in the sciences. We hope that the RMC will be a yearly tradition, serving as valuable learning experience our students will cherish as they pursue careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.
