Description

Messenger observations of mercury have provided an unprecedented dataset for analyzing its geology, geomorphology, and surface properties. In this proposed study, we describe our plan to analyze data that has been underutilized to date, namely stereo images of the surface. From these data, we will produce thousands of new stereo digital terrain models (dtms), which we will share with the community, and address several science questions as an example of the type of work that can be done with this data. Our stereo analysis will rely on two paths for deriving dtms. We will first complete an automated, wholesale analysis of all stereo image pairs we identify using isis and the ames stereo pipeline. We will follow this with a more detailed manual analysis that incorporates bundle adjustment and analysis of locations that are constrained by multiple stereo angles, with a special focus on areas identified as promising during automated processing. These manually processed dtms will be submitted to the PDS, and the automatically processed dtms will be posted to a public website for other interested investigators. After stereo analysis, we will complete two science investigations to demonstrate the utility of these dtms. First, we will use the new topographic information to provide a detailed, quantitative analysis of impact crater degradation on mercury. Second, we will analyze the topography of pyroclastic deposits and vent structures to address outstanding science questions related to their formation and similarities and differences with well-studied lunar structures. This project is relevant to the objectives of the pmdap program, since our analysis of mdis stereo data will increase the scientific return from data archived by messenger.
