Description
The contribution of the ocean biological pump to the global carbon cycle is currently poorlyconstrained, in part because we lack observations of: 1) processes controlling carbon export from the euphotic zone; and 2) attenuation of carbon fluxes below the euphotic zone, in the upper 1000 m. Autonomous, profiling floats carrying beam transmissometers act as optical sediment traps , drifting at depth while measuring the accumulation of sinking particles on the upwardfacing window of the transmissometer. Optical sediment traps have the potential to greatly increase the number and spatiotemporal density of particle flux measurements in this criticallyundersampled twilight zone . Field calibrations versus CO-deployed, neutrally-buoyant sediment traps (nbsts) are currently underway.
