Description

A primary goal of NASA-led orbiter and lander missions to mars is to determine if life ever arose on the planet. This objective is also shared by the planetary science community, as is outlined in the mars exploration program analysis group (MEPAG) mars science goals, objectives, investigations, and priorities (2008) document. Goal 1, objective a of the MEPAG document describes the need to assess the past and present habitability of mars. Related to this goal, goal II, objective B highlights the importance of characterizing the ancient climate and specific climate processes through a study of the geologic record of climate change. The primary, testable hypotheses of this project relate directly to the heart of both MEPAG objectives, as we intend to address the habitability potential of the equatorial region of the planet at a time when the climate on mars had begun to cool. Our integrated approach will allow US to make conclusions regarding the likelihood that the target landforms formed by a local, regional, or global process of climate change, the duration and potential episodicity of this process, and the impact this climate change had on the hydrologic cycle and surface mineralogy of mars.
