Description
Although standards are available for thermal insulation in general, few address the sub-ambient temperature range and cold-side temperatures below 100 k [1]. New standards for cryogenic insulation systems require cryostat testing and data analysis to produce the reports and tools needed to establish thermal data sets practical for use by design engineers and thermal analysts [2]. This critically important technology is needed to provide reliable data and methodologies for industrial energy efficiency and energy conservation. Under astm international s committee C16 on thermal insulation, two task groups have been established in the area of cryogenic insulation systems: WK29609 - new standard for thermal performance testing of cryogenic insulation systems and WK29608 - standard practice for multilayer insulation in cryogenic service. To assess the accuracy of the reference data, astm requires that multiple facilities test the same sample on similar or identical equipment and compare the results. There are no independent laboratories conducting these measurements outside of NASA. This collaboration will serve as a trial run, or initial interlaboratory study, that can provide specific inputs regarding the development and application of the new standards for cryogenic insulation systems.
