Description

Background S.D. Miller & associates research foundation (SMARF) is the prime contractor. SMARF has been working for the last five years on developing efficient honeycomb structures for structurally integrated thermal protection systems (SITPS) and for the past 18 months on flexible high temperature insulation (FHTI). Demonstration of a 3000F composite structure thermal protection system is a research proposal selected by the aeronautics research mission directorate through the fundamental aeronautics: hypersonics project 2007 research announcement NNH07ZEA001N-HYP1 subtopic a.5.1.1 advanced manufacturing technologies for high-temperature composite structures. The primary goal of the base effort is to develop and demonstrate a ceramic-based honeycomb panel filled with efficient insulation as a high-temperature, light-weight, load-bearing integrated structural thermal protection system (ISTPS) for hypersonic vehicles. The goal of the augmented effort is to develop efficient flexible high-temperature insulation (FHTI) that could be used as insulations in ISTPS and also as flexible insulations developed for inflatable decelerators for atmospheric entry being developed under fundamental aeronautics. Objective during the upcoming 12-month effort, the objective is to complete certain tasks relevant to the design, testing and manufacture of efficient FHTI manufactured using opacified fibrous insulation (OFI). Significance lighter, more durable TPS are needed to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs for future hypersonic vehicles. Improved materials are needed to make these TPS. FHTI is a very efficient high-temperature flexible insulation system that could be used in combination with other materials on future vehicles.
