Description

We will produce several 3D models of the pasterze glacier in austria using maps of the 1880S, 1928, and aster imagery. The loss of glacier volume and length is of great concern to environmentalists and the hydro-electric power stations, and thus to the local population. As many glaciers in the european alps and in most mountain ranges in the northern hemisphere are losing mass as summer temperatures increase, this is a wide-ranging issue. We will thus address the question "how will the loss of glacier volume affect the downstream population?" a student at keene state college will be assisting in the study to analyze the data and to produce 3D models of the glacier over several years. In addition the recession of the glacier will be delineated on satellite imagery and possibly by ground truthing in austria. The production of the 3D models will demonstrate how the height and the volume of the glacier has changed since the 1980S. IT will help to understand the impact global warming has on glaciers. Glaciers are slow to respond to any climate change but they are good indicators of the trend of temperatures rising or falling. We propose to present the results to elementary and secondary schools in the local area to demonstrate the massive losses of glacial ICE and its consequences on the population of the nearby areas using the pasterze glacier as the example.
