Description

This statement of work (SOW) describes the national aeronautics and space administration (NASA) johnson space center (JSC) requirement for the completion of single muscle fiber size and contractile function analyses for the human research program study entitled, integrated resistance and aerobic training study . This information will serve as an outcome measure in assessing a candidate exercise protocol that incorporates short intervals of high intensity aerobic and resistive exercise, in an effort to enhance crew health and performance. Data collection will be completed on both flight crew participants and bedrest subjects participating in an evaluation of this candidate exercise protocol. IT is highly desirable to have the same laboratory analyze the flight and bedrest samples. DR. Scott trappe and DR. Todd trappe of the human performance laboratory at ball state university (muncie, in) have unique expertise to complete this work and have worked closely with NASA since 1994 to examine the skeletal muscle responses to space flight and during ground based analog studies to develop effective exercise countermeasure programs. DRS. Scott and todd trappe currently oversee these analyses at the ball state university human performance laboratory and will serve as principal investigator and CO-investigator, respectively, for the services described herein. Furthermore, DR. Scott trappe is a CO-investigator for the integrated resistance and aerobic training study to be conducted on international space station crew participants, while DR. Todd trappe is a study collaborator for this flight investigation where biopsy samples will be collected and analyzed.
